Last week we watched a tv commercial made by cellphone company orange in the UK. We related the theme to our current learning about the school's new set of values, and thought about the people who have cared for us and how they have helped to make us the people we are today. We used Keynote and QuicktimePro to make this presentation. Each of us made out own presentation, but for the purpose of the school's relaunching, we made one class presentation with one slide from each of us. Thank you for watching our movie.

Clubs: A Lolly Leopold Story

On the last Thursday of term, we read the book called Clubs written by Kate De Goldi. You can see more information about this book in our book shelf further down the page. It tells of the spreading craze at Lolly's school of creating and joining clubs. Lolly, however, does not approve and refuses to join any of them.

Pod 9 used this opportunity to develop their skills in using Kidspiration. They did not have much time to create a mind map the clubs that were mentioned in the book.

Click on the pictures to get a better look at them. The picture with the yellow background is not quite finished, but was made by Tia and Paige. Katie and Mary-Rose made the picture on the left, while Tayla made the green picture on her own.

The Jousting Competition

Here is another story that appealed to the kids in Pod 9. This one was written by John. We hope you enjoy it.

The Jousting Competition

It was the day before the big jousting competition and Julia’s dad Lord Robert had gone to a battle. Julia really wanted to go to the jousting competition but she couldn’t because she was a girl, so she had to stay with Aunt Odellia for the day. But she and her friend Timothy had secretly made a plan which was to change places just before the competition started, so Julia would pretend to be Timothy and go to the jousting competition while Timothy would pretend to be Julia and stay with Aunt Odellia.

That night, there was a raging storm outside . No-one got a wink of sleep so on the next day, everyone was extremely tired. The jousting competition wasn’t called off so the knights were all very excited. Before the competition started, Julia and Timothy carefully swapped places so the judge wouldn’t take any notice.

Timothy sneaked off back to the castle but unfortunately, Aunt Odellia had noticed Julia’s suspicious absence so she shouted at Timothy, “Where is Julia?” "I ... Er don’t know" lied Timothy. "She should be back in a few minutes" he added hastily. Aunt Odellia gave her a are-you-sure look so Timothy crept to Julia’s room.

Meanwhile Julia was facing a young unexperienced knight that was quite clumsy. He knocked himself out when he accidentally threw a large rock at his face. Julia had easily made it into the final but her last opponent was the former champion. The jousting went on for ages and her strong opponent took many powerful swings but lost his balance on his last swing and fell onto the floor with a clunk and got squashed like a tomato by his tough horse when it landed on him. The crowd cheered as Timothy - well Julia pretending to be Timothy was crowned the champion.

Today we read a story about the Sneetches by Dr Seuss. We did a story board on kidspiration, we could make it all different colours. This one was made by Laura.

For their Assessment Folders, the students were asked to write a story with a medieval theme. All children in the syndicate were given the same set of characters, setting and problem. It was up to them to decide how they were going to 'solve' this problem and how the story would play out.

I usually do not enjoy marking the English assessments much (I like maths), but this task was different. I found all the stories interesting, and I was really impressed with the level of creativity and imagination that was used.

The class selected some stories that they thought were particularly well done. We were looking for stories that had descriptive language, and had original solutions to Julia's problem.

This first story was written by Callum, and was a hit with many in the class. There will be more stories published on this blog in the coming days.

Joust About That

It was the day before the jousting tournament when with a pang of sadness and jealousy, Julia remembered that her father (Lord Robert) and his knights had gone to battle the Normans. She had asked if she could go but her father had said that she was too young and she was a girl.

So now she was stuck in the castle with her crazy Aunt Odelia. She wanted to play with her friend Timothy. Julia decided to go check what Aunt Odelia was doing, so she crept down the hallway to her aunt’s chamber. She heard Aunt Odelia fussing about what to do with her.

Julia had a plan; she was going to wait outside Aunt Odelia’s chamber with a pot and then, BAM!!!

Aunt Odelia won’t know what hit her. Julia got ready quickly, then she got into position. Within a minute the door creaked open on its rusted hinges and before she knew it, Aunt Odelia lay unconscious in front of her.

Julia then walked to her father’s chamber and thought “a bit of gold won’t matter” so she walked up and grabbed a handful of shiny gold coins. Then Julia snuck off to find the Master of Ceremonies.

She crept along the well-worn path towards the arena. Suddenly she heard hooves pounding along the well-worn gravel path. Julia dove into the undergrowth and spun around to see a horse galloping speedily by with the Master of Ceremonies on its back. ”Stop” Julia yelled at the top of her voice. The Master of Ceremonies was obviously surprised and fell off his horse.

“What do you want” he shouted angrily. “I want to enter the tournament as Billy” she exclaimed. ”But you’re a girl” he replied. She showed him the coins and he accepted instantly.

That day she trained hard with Timothy and cut her hair. She was extremely tired by night time and fell into a deep sleep.

In the morning, she woke, hastily put on her armour, stole a horse and hurried off to the arena. ”Oh no!” she said, the tournament had already started.

Timothy was battling fiercely with another knight. The enemy fell painfully off his horse. Timothy had won. Now it was her turn. She struggled in her heavy armour and hefted a lance (that was two times her size) and charged at the enemy knight. She felt a sharp pain in her side and all went black.

M Homework

This week's homework topic was a career starting with M. Here is the learning that some of the students did. These were chosen by the class. Hopefully you will be able to read them properly. Click on the photos to see them (much) larger.

Jessica's topic was Marine Biologist. As always, her presentation and design was neat and attractive. She even included a Wordle of key phrases relating to her topic.

Laura has been looking forward to this week for a while now. She is a big fan of monkeys.

Adam's learning on Magicians was awesome. In the hat is a removable rabbit (so you are pulling a rabbit out of the hat) which includes more information.

My favourite topic this week was Devan's Muppeteer. This really took me back to my childhood. Good times...

Rio found a lot of information about Matadors. From what he's found out, it sounds like a pretty dangerous job.

Once again, Shenae produced some fantastic learning, using some really creative ideas for presenting her information. She has now achieved two 10s, the only person to do so this year.

I'm looking forward to next week's homework - Pod 9 always come up with some really interesting topic when they have a free choice.

Once upon a medieval time in a village called Astley,

Lord Robert’s daughter Julia clever,brave but stubborn was in her chamber muttering to herself ‘I want to complete in the royal jousting competition but dad or if you prefer Lord Robert won’t let me

he shouted only strong and brave boy’s only or some-thing like that.

He shouted ‘lady like girls aren’t strong enough’ Not totally true.

Meanwhile confident Timothy,brave Julia’s best friend arrived and

Timothy’s thought and he agreed with brave Julia, s they both were scheming a plan.

So it was the day of the of the jousting competition

confident Timothy entered and was putting his shiny armour on when brave Julia came in and whispered ‘are ready I brought the girly make-up’ So with a puff of powder there and some lipstick there confident Timothy really looked sick.

Confident Timothy had no intention of competing, hoped into bed and acted sick,Brave Julia got on confident Timothy’s shiny armour and when his mum came in and saw how he looked sick, She said ‘you are forbidden to compete in the jousting competition you are to sick’

Confident Timothy said ‘who will take my place’ then brave Julia came in and yelled ‘I will’ but confident Timothy’s mum was didn’t know it was her because brave Julia wearing a wig.

Confident Timothy’s mum agreed and left the room. ‘So Julia’ said Timothy ‘good luck and how are you getting away from your crazy aunt Odellia and your father’ said confident Timothy?‘Crazy aunt Odellia is sleeping and dad is out hunting’ replied brave Julia ‘O.k well bye’ said Timothy!

Brave Julia arrived at the arena and noticed her opponent was LORD ROBERT HER OWN FATHER! ‘I thought...oh my...’ Then the speaker sounded 10 minutes left till round . Meanwhile back at the chamber confident Timothy sneaked out to watch brave Julia was upon her royal steed and then the sign went to joust brave Julia was as fat as a rocket but her dad was faster all of a sudden CRASH!!! Julia was knocked off her royal steed her shining armour for her head fell off and so did herichy wig her special father saw and rushed to her side and so did warm hearted Timothy. Brave Julia looked up and spoke the gentle words I’m sorry dad.

The next thing is so sad so I’m not gonna give it a dramatic effect, all I’m gonna say is she died.

New Gear, Old Problems

Hello everybody.
The new school year started this week on Wednesday. The senior school has relatively big classes this year, with 30 students in Pod 9.
While I would love to have the class put their first posts up on a blog, this is currently impossible due to a new computer system being installed at Hurupaki School. However, our new Airports are yet to arrive in New Zealand, and so we don't have any internet access in classes.
As you can imagine, this has been rather frustrating for the students and teachers alike. Hopefully we will be back online asap.
By the way, I have set up a wiki for Pod 9 this year with individual students having their own pages. I'm hoping that they will take ownership of their sites, posting their work here in the future. Watch this space. Just click on the wikispaces icon below for find it, even though there's nothing really there yet....

The Summer Break

Hello to everybody out there. I hope that you're having a great break from school, and that Santa was good to you this year.
Just to let you know that this blog will be going off line sometime near the end of the holidays, perhaps the 28th or 29th of January. Until then you are of course welcome to use it as you have in the past.

Just wanted to say I wish all of you a very merry Christmas and I hope you all will have a safe Christmas too. I going to tell you what Im doing for Christmas because Im really excited and I really have to tell some one so what Im doing is going to the beach with my family and we are going to have a christmas lunch there and my poppy is going to bring his boat and we are going to buy a hotdog or a buscuit (not the foodthe sea toys) and weare going to have so much fun.Well Merry Christmas and have a happy 2009 oh wait I almost forgot good luck for the year 6's that are going to intermedit (however you spell it) have fun and tell me year 5 and6's what class you are going in. Street Art

During this final term of 2008, our topic for art has been street art. The key concepts that we have been exploring have been:

1. The use of modern fonts over traditional fonts,
2. The contrast of using cold colours and hot coulurs, and
3. The use of space, and in particular the layering, or overlapping of letters in words.

Every student in Pod 9 made their work based around a fruit. Their work has been compiled into this slideshow. They worked really hard to achieve these results, and I feel these photos do not provide the same effect as seeing the works in real life, so to speak.

I think you'll see the quality that everybody strived for during this learning.

Theme

This is our theme work about falling and sinking

Falling and sinking are the same because....

-both involve objects being pulled by gravity.

-both can be reduced by making things wider and flatter in shape.

Falling and sinking are different because....

-objects fall through air and sink through liquid.

-falling is faster than sinking because liquid is thicker than air.

-some objects that fall, don't sink.

We made tin foil boats to make rocks float.

The best designs that held the most weight were the ones that had the largest areas and had high sides. The high sides stopped the water getting in and the large areas stopped the shapes falling through the water.

Hurupaki Tapuwae Champions

Today Pod 9 and Pod 10 played the final of the Hurupaki Senior School Tapuwae competition. It was a very tight battle, with some very long periods of play without goals being scored.

In the end Pod 9 came out on top by a score of 18-15. Both teams played exceptionally well and can be proud of the way that they played - hard but fair. Pod 7 finished third, and Pod 8 fourth.

On the whole, I think the competition has been a success and I intend to run similiar competitions next year.

Hopefully we will have photos of the "trophy presentation" next week, depending on when it will be held.

Gravity

The force of gravity is constant, all objects fall at the same rate.

Fair testing

A fair test is when all conditions are exactly the same for both tests.

Things we used for tests ...

-Blue shot put

-Green shot put

-Red petanque ball

-Green hockey ball

-Brown hockey ball

-Tennis ball

-Green petanque ball

-Sponge

-Foam softball

In all fair tests, the objects landed at the same time. This means that the force of gravity IS constant. All objects fall at the same rate!!!!

That is what we learned about gravity yesterday ... so we'll post some more tomorrow.

The flat paper fell slowly because it had the most area hitting the air. The air stopped the paper from falling.

The streamlined paper fell quickly because the air only hit a small area of the paper. The air could not push the paper.

What do we know about Gravity?

Yesterday the class watched some videos about skydiving and the use of parachutes and discussed how and why things fall or sink. We had used a bus stop activity to explore some ideas about gravity and air. There were 7 statements written on card that each individual had to decide was true or false.

Some of the statements were "Air can push against things", "When an object is floating, it is not falling", and "We can speed up or slow down the rate at which an object falls through the air." Some of the results were very interesting.

At the end of our unit, we will revisit these and see if our opinions have changed at all.

Hi Bronte, and everybody else.
We have been very busy lately, and have been doing lots of different things. Unfortunately, we have not had the cow lately, so have not been able to make some posts on the blog. We should put something up this or maybe next week.
In art, we have been making some street art, which I will take photos of and post next week hopefully. We also designed a new logo for the school. I wonder if anybody from Pod 9 will win the school-wide competition. Hope so.
Did you know that next Friday (5th Dec) is National Jandal Day. This is to raise money for Surf Lifesaving NZ. We're going to have a competition at school, where you can win a battery powered motorboat.
Pod 9 won their Tapuwae semi-final yesterday against Pod 7 and will play either Pod 8 or Pod 10 in the final next week.
As for me (Mr B), I'm spend these 2 days at this year's TechQuest at Forum North. I'm taking a workshop on podcasting. I must say that I'm very impressed with what the students have been able to do. I'm sure the kids back at school would love to see the results.

Hi everyone
Just seeing how you guys are, have you been doing any thing interesting? Well today we did word wall art if you are wondering what that is, when you get a tile a small one or you can use a big one and you need some paper tissue p.v.a glue and you use ribbons and you need to use rub on words like little sayings and what you do you get a picture hook and you hot glue gun it on the back. Then when you have done that you put p.v.a glue on the top of the tile and put the tussie paper on the tile and lightly push it down and press the air bubbles out then glue the tussie paper around the edges then you can decorate it with ribbon and stickers and whatever other stuff you want on it then you get a hair dryer and dry the glue then when the glue drys rub the little saying or word on that you want on it then that is pretty much it well better go.

Zion wildlife park

Hi everyone,
How is it? Just giving you a little update on how things are going for me, this is what I'm up to.On Tuseday I went rock climbing with my sisters and today we were going to go horse riding but it started raining really hard so that was cancelled, then we went to Spotlight to buy some fabric so I can make a top with my Gran but when we were paying for the fabric the shop had a power cut (oh no) so in the morning we have to go back to get the gear to make my top. This is what I'm doing next week.On Tuesday I'm going rock climbing on Wednesday I am going to watch a show at the Form North on Thursday we are going to the lion park with the home educators group for a tour and then on Friday we are going to the pools for swimming practice so I am fully booked (heehee) ;-) I will give you guys another update later.

World of Maths

Today Pod 9, along with Pod 7, were able to participate in a World of Maths workshop. In groups of three, students move around different activities and using their mathematical abilities, solve the various problems. There was a wide range of activities that required different skills that many students did not even realise that they had. Here are a few photos of students at work. For the Pod 9 students reading this, leave a comment explaining what activities you liked and why. Would you recommend other students attend World of Maths? Why/Why not??

Hi every one,
Just leting you know that I won't be coming back to school I am doing homeschooling with my sisters I am having fun bit im missing my friends(Viki,Hayley and Cheyenne)Yesterday I went to circus skills and today I went rock climbing with my sisters it was so fun I just want to do it again but I will do it again next Tusday. This is how I feel about how well I did :-)!

I feel this way because when we played deadzone on the courts I was always catching the ball.

KIS Roadshow

Today we had the Kamo Intermediate roadshow. The Kamo roadshow had some mean performances going on. The best thing was the Hip Hop dance it was mean ,The funniest thing was when Matthew got the robots battery out and said '' I GOT THE POWER'' . The best thing was the Kapa Haka . There were six girls and five boys . They were loud and acted in some other acts . I thought that other people would of done it for them.

Today Kamo inter came to our school to do performs.It was awesome when they did their acts it made me feel excited. They did many types of things like dancing,singing,playing music and many more things. I reckon that the dancing was the best and the robots were really funny.I thought the Kapa Haka was really good. When the k.i.s performed i thought that Shayla and Jade were awesome .I thought that because i like gymnastics .I reckon that their name is cool groovy gymnasts .I also liked Matthew's jokes they were incredible well that was how i judge them. The robots were weird it stopped Matthew when he was saying dancing.

Today the K.I.S. came toour school. We had peformances from a Kapa Haka group. They sang a lot of maori songs twice and did really good actions. I knew a couple of people there. I think i knew some people that were singing they were really good. I think the robots were funny

Today we had the Kamo Intermediate school roadshow today.I reckon that some of the acts were quite good. I think it could have gone for longer and had a few more acts. When I was lining up I thought about all the acts I might see like sining guitar playing and some dancing and lots of other things. I KNOW! they need better jokes.I like the robots they were a bit funny

Yesterday we had the K.I.S roadshow come to our school to show their talents Mr.B made us write about what we thought of it heres what i wrote.......

Today was the K.I.S roadshow. I thought it looked like so much fun. My favourite act was the lollipop one. It was so cool. I was extremely excited. I also think the random robots that were trying to dominate the world were really super cool. The Dancers would have been my pick for best section. I love it when the K.I.S roadshow comes but next year i get to be in it!!!!

This morning the Kamo intermediate roadshow came to our school. I reckon it was really good. There were lots of people doing singing and dancing and I thought there could have been a bit less because there was a bit too much. There was also quite a lot of dancers in the show. I feel that there should have been more boys. I suppose I liked the singers best, they were really good. But next year I might be in it! I really hope they do it again next year so all the people at the schools can enjoy it and K.I.S talent can keep going to entertain kids.

Guess what! HPS (Hurupaki Primary School) had an exceptional performace from Kamo Intermediate School. I reckon the most amazing cousin in the world A.K.A MATHEW KERR!did a lot of comical jokes, nevertheless he was working with a girl eww discusting (for him anyway)I felt sorry for him! Somehow they had somehow they had some girls who probably thought they where doing Hip-Hop or Harcore but since I do both I think they just made a dance up and said it was Hip-Hop or hot Hardcore but it was nothing, get it nothing!The most funny part was when Matt pulled a power pack from the back of a robot because there where two robots and well, Matt pulled it out of the back of one and said "I've got the power! that was very amusing. I hope you can see me do an amazing performace next year!

Today we had the Kamo Intermediate School RoadShow.I thought it was alright, even though i think the flipping gymnasts were pretty cool.I reckon that some big lunged singers could have done a lot better that the dancing, singing etc. that they did do.I suppose that they put a lot of hard sympathtic work in, because some of it didn’t look as though they put in a lot of effort.

On Tuesday we had the Kamo Intermediate road-show it was awesome!My favourite was probably one of the bands,I thought the bass guitar was cool (but noisy).The robots were really funny but their batteries were taken out.The lollipop song I thought was excellent.Matthew's jokes were funny especially the one about tap dancing dangerous because you could fall down the sink.Next year I hope it will be as good.

He Honere we all could hear the great song from the Kapa Haka group their hearts out. I thougt of how amazingly loud they were.

The next act was a blues band. At first they sounded quiet. But then you could feel the beat and the loud music and you have to listen more and more.

But the acts came flying and flying and I started to feel sad and felt upset then randomly Matt Kerr turned these robot off because they tryed to take over the human race and after that he held up this book that said the power of turning things and said '' I got the power''.

After maths rotation we had the K.I.S roadshow. (Kamo Intermediate School) There were heaps of acts. I liked watching people who were in the bands. I thought it looked fun playing instruments in front of people. There were robots and they were really funny because when people were playing in the bands the robots kept coming in and dancing to the music. When the people were playing in the bands the music was cool it made me want to dance. The KapaHaka group was loud they must of had heaps of practice. I thought that some people were not loud enough. All of the roadshow people were great well I thought that.

What I thought of the Kamo roadshow. WOW! It blew me away. I suppose they had a lot to show. I reckon they had a lot of talent. You could hear the roar of the auidence clapping. I realised they did there best. There was marvellous acts to see. I can't wait till next years roadshow

Today the KIS roadshow came to our school and performed a lot of talented things. I thought that the pokemon jokes were funny especially the second joke. A really funny part was at the end when Matt pulled out the power from the robot and said ''I got the power''. I think that the robots were a bit dumb because robots could have killed everyone while they had the chance. I reckon that the Kapa Haka group was a lot more louder then our Kapa Haka and they only have 11 kids in theirs and have a lot more then us although they are in intermediate. But everthing was super awsome and maybe next year I will be in the KIS roadshow.

Olympics Day

Last monday Hurupaki school had the great olympics day and we all really enjoyed it.

My great team was Atlantis and we won 4 medals kalanily won gold in egg and spoon race,Sam won silver in egg and spoon race,Sharnae won gold in hurdles and James won silver in dart throwing.

I really thought i would win a medal in JAVILIN or SHOT PUT.

I really hated gumboot throw because the seniors had such a far throw and i hated it also i could not throw that far.

I Jayden Ham was the banner holder but Jayd was the flag bearer and my partner Min Su was always late so i always had to find a banner holder relever and it also had to be a senior so i was always running around mad trying to find a great royal banner holder.

At the closing ceremony i was ready to do the great walk around the playground when i heard Mrs Howett lost her Flag so i had to help i looked and looked but i couldn't find it so at the opening ceremony we had the medals and the closing and then after the ceremony i went to ut stuff away in the P.E shed and then I saw Mrs Howett's Flag.

This morning we had to work with little kids . Me and Bronte went with Lucy. I think Lucy was good and creative. I just watched her it was fun and cool. We didn't need to teach them anything but we did anyway. Mr.B went to pod 6 to get the C.O.W but it was already there. We had so much fun it was cool. We were going to do some art on a cow. We just told them what did what and we just watch.

This morning we went to pod 1 to teach the little kids how to use kidpix. I was with Lucy and Cheyenne helped me. Lucy had real fun. We had to tell them how to hold it and what to do when you get the computer. When you get the computer you hold it with to hands and go back to your table then you check for any damage if there is damage tell the teacher then we showed them how to get on to kidpix then we showed them how to use it. I had fun teaching them. Lucy said she wants to do it again another time.

We are also helping Pod 1 to use the COW for the first time today. It is a bit crowded at the moment, but everybody is enjoying themselves and learning some new skills - both Pod 1 and Pod 9.

These are some podcasts that some children made when they read the book "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds. This was a good way for the children to practise using expression in their reading. Using the computer allowed them to listen to themselves talking and make improvements each time they recorded a different part of the story.
